Please Take the Confederate Flag Down From the Capital of South Carolina

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent  about things that matter." Martin Luther King First, my heart and prayers go out to the families and friends, the congregation, the people of Charleston and to our country. The horrific shootings at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC are a symptom of a deep-rooted sickness in our country that can only begin to heal when we treat the root causes -- fear and hate. As I watch the television coverage of the families of those murdered, I am amazed by their faith and their commitment to forgive the man who took the lives of their loved ones. They should be an inspiration to all of us. We must move to a collective mindset where love is the foundational value that shapes our lives, our communities, our country and our world. Now to my plea: please take the Confederate flag down! I feel compelled to talk about the Confederate flag because symbols matter! A culture's symbols are critically importan

Family Matters: DreamMakers, Unapologetically Investing in the Underserved

I believe we can change the world. My passion is seeking out and shining a light on people, businesses, organizations and communities that are doing just that. I call these people DreamMakers . Family Matters of Greater Washington led by their visionary President and CEO, Tonya Jackson Smallwood are DreamMakers Joe Brodecki, the DreamMaker who led the Campaign to Remember fundraising initiative for the development of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum introduced me to Tonya. . http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michele-hunt/a-campaign-to-remember-th_b_6570314.html "I have an idea for another Huffington Post piece on a wonderful, remarkable woman, her name is Tonya Jackson Smallwood. Tonya leads Family Matters, which serves people from the womb to the rocking chair. Tonya is one of the most inspiring people I've ever met -- she is a true DreamMaker. Interestingly, she commutes by bus to DC from Spotsylvania everyday; talk about commitment". Three weeks later I w

Reflections on the Value of Women and Girls, in Honor of Women’s History Month

We have waited long enough to tell our stories; and oh what precious stories we have to share. Yet we have kept them safely and selfishly from the world. We have tucked them away in our bosoms, whispered them to our daughters, and laughed and cried as we secretly shared them with our beloved sisters and girlfriends. Some of us have been courageous enough to share our stories with our sons, and the men who have been sensitive enough to listen. No religion, philosophy, belief system, nationalism or fraternalism is stronger than the experience of being a women and bearing a child. Creating life is God, Goddess manifested – proof of all the questions anyone could ever have about the authenticity of the divine. How then can we as women, send our children to die in any war, but especially wars that in our heart, we know, make no sense? Our innocent children’s legacy should not be defined by our past transgressions. How do we let our daughters believe they are inferior, weak, or “not e

REACH: 40 Black Men Speak on Living, Leading and Succeeding; A Different Narrative for Black Men In America

I believe in the power of storytelling. Stories ignite our imagination, inspire us to dream big and give us the courage to make our dreams come true. It is time to hear and celebrate the untold stories about successful Black men in America -- this book does just that. REACH: 40 Black Men Speak on Living, Leading and Succeeding, is edited by Ben Jealous, former president and CEO of the NAACP and partner at Kapor Capital, and Trabian Shorters, founder and CEO of BMe; the foreword was written by Russell Simmons. This book is inspirational as well as instructional. At a time when the mass media overwhelmingly depicts Black men in negative racial stereotypes -- this book shines a light on impactful, positive stories of successful Black men who dared to dream big, and made their dreams come true against tremendous obstacles. These men are also deeply committed to uplifting their communities and to changing the one-dimensional image that pervades most narratives about Black Men in America

A Campaign To Remember: The Lessons of the Holocaust are Critically Relevant Today

I was watching the HBO special, Night Will Fall , which depicts the atrocities of the Nazi concentration camps during World War II. I was deeply affected by these horrific acts and wanted to do something, anything to help us to remember, and to inspire us to do our part to make sure this never happens again. Then I thought about the Boko Haram terrorist in Nigeria who have massacred 5,000 people and an estimated 1.5 million are reported to have fled their homes since the violence accelerated in 2009.  I also reflected on the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, the anti-Semitic sentiment currently spreading across Europe and the plethora of conflicts in our world today. All of these acts of hate and violence have a common theme - they are all rooted in racism, intolerance and fear. It is very clear to me that the lessons of the Holocaust are very relevant today. Can it happen again? Is it beginning to happen? Will we let 11 million people die and millions more be tortured and displaced?
